Disposal to energy recovery
Get a quote
Residual waste in the Perth metropolitan area usually ends up in one of more than 30 landfills. Now, clients of REMONDIS can divert their non-recyclable residual commercial waste from landfill to energy recovery, via REMONDIS’s arrangement with Acciona’s Kwinana Energy Recovery facility.
Located in the southern suburbs of Perth, Kwinana Energy Recovery is the first facility in Australia that integrates recovery and reuse of waste with the generation of electricity delivering renewable baseload power to a large metropolitan population and an industrial base.
Disposal to energy recovery sits squarely with REMONDIS’s global resource recovery ethos. We will always encourage and enable source separation of recyclables, but we can now provide our customers in WA with an environmentally responsible solution for the residual general waste that is not suitable for higher order recycling and/or recovery.
How our disposal to energy recovery service works
REMONDIS's is providing its commercial customers with a landfill diversion solution for residual solid waste, via our disposal agreement with Kwinana Energy Recovery. Here's how it works:
Kwinana Energy Recovery generates electricity from thermal treatment. Residual solid waste from commercial and industrial sources is shredded then incinerated in a closed system which powers turbines to generate electricity.
Key power statistics:
At full operational capacity, Kwinana Energy Recovery will divert up to 460,000 tonnes of waste per annum from landfill and deliver 38 megawatts of renewable baseload power to the Western Power grid.
Kwinana Energy Recovery is connected to the Southwest Interconnected System (SWIS) via Western Power. The export of 300,000 MWhrs per year will be managed through AEMO. The facility has been assigned 33.9MW of Capacity Credits and will produce Largescale Generation Certificates (LGC’s) from the biodegradable waste processed, expected to be ca. 150,000 Certificates annually.
Offtakes:
The processing of 460,000 tpa of waste will produce ca. 80,000 tpa of Incinerator Bottom Ash (IBA). Processing refines the IBA to recover valuable Ferrous and Non-Ferrous metals (ca. 13,000 tpa). Through sieving and blending this produces a well graded aggregate called IBAA (Incinerator Bottom Ash Aggregate).
IBAA can be used as a construction material (eg. road subbase, retaining wall blocks) that reduces use of virgin material.
Projected key environmental metrics:
For REMONDIS, diverting our commercial non-recyclable general waste from landfill to Kwinana for energy production is the obvious choice for sustainable waste management and environmental stewardship.
The benefits to our clients include:
Acceptable for disposal to energy recovery:
Solid wastes from commercial and industrial businesses in the Perth metropolitan area, which does not include specific contaminants
Unacceptable for disposal to energy recovery:
Energy recovery – also known as Energy from Waste, Waste to Energy, EfW or W2E – is an umbrella term for an array of technologies, processes and practices which convert waste materials into energy or fuel. Energy recovery plants commonly recover energy and produce electricity from the combustion of non-recyclable waste, or through methane harvesting.
Energy recovery is recognised as part of the overall solution to achieve the zero landfill objectives sought by communities and governments around the world.
You'll find more details about REMONDIS's approach to energy recovery, here.
In thermal energy recovery facilities, non-recyclable waste is treated at high temperature and energy is recovered from the process to produce power when is then supplied to nearby industry or the local grid. The waste is dropped inside the facility in a waste bunker, where odour can be contained. From there, the waste is fed into a combustion chamber where it is burned at high temperature, more than 850 degrees Celsius. The heat from the combustion boils waste to create steam, and the steam is used to drive a large turbine and generate electricity.
Thermal energy recovery plants also recover metals and aggregates for recycling, reducing the waste stream going to landfill by more than 95%.
Thermal energy recovery facilities are used safely and successfully in densely populated cities around the world and all but eliminate non-recyclable waste that would otherwise go to landfill. At the same time, they produce baseload energy that can be fed into local grids or channelled for industrial purposes on a 24/7 basis.
Heat produced from non-recyclable waste processed in thermal energy recovery facilities is used to create electricity that is considered 50 percent renewable as opposed to traditional carbon intensive coal-fired electricity.
Less than five percent of material remaining from the combustion process ends up going to landfill. Or, in other words, more than 95 percent of waste that would normally go to landfill is diverted from going into the ground. This means far better environmental outcomes compared to landfill practices which can result in land disturbance, odour and long-term methane and leachate issues.
