Milestone acquisition adds sites in NSW, SA and WA to REMONDIS Australia footprint

REMONDIS Australia // 11 April 2022

1

REMONDIS has acquired several Veolia and SUEZ sites, assets and customers

2

Significant expansion of REMONDIS’ footprint, including return to South Australia

3

Acquisition supported by ACCC in the interest of competitive tension in the waste sector

MEDIA RELEASE

REMONDIS has completed one of its biggest phases of acquisition activity since arriving in Australia 40 years ago, having secured numerous competitor sites and operations across the country.

A spin-off of broader global waste sector acquisition activity, the commercial-in-confidence deal sees REMONDIS return to the South Australian market and boost its Australian footprint more broadly, in turn consolidating its position as one of the country’s foremost recycling and waste management players.

Specifically, REMONDIS is positioned to increase commercial, industrial and medical waste management and recycling offerings to new and existing clients across the B2G, B2B and B2C sectors.

The arrangements stem from Veolia Environnement S.A. (Veolia) acquiring Suez Environnement S.A. (SUEZ).

As part of that process, Veolia provided an undertaking to the Australian Competition and Consumer Commission (ACCC) to divest certain commercial, industrial and medical waste businesses and assets across Sydney, Adelaide and Perth to address competition-related concerns.

REMONDIS entered into a conditional sale agreement with Veolia in December 2021 and all conditions have since been met.

With the new arrangements coming into effect as of Saturday 9 April, REMONDIS has acquired the following Veolia and SUEZ businesses, assets and customers:

  • Jandakot Commercial & Industrial Collections Business (Perth) Enabling REMONDIS to dovetail existing and new operations, this acquisition will see REMONDIS further expand its footprint in Perth, providing new opportunities to lift resource recovery activity in the region
  • Wingfield Commercial & Industrial Collections and Medical Waste Business (Adelaide) This acquisition will position REMONDIS as a leading provider of commercial waste and resource recovery services in Adelaide. With a new administration headquarters, depot and workshop, REMONDIS will focus on secure product destruction, medical waste treatment and recyclables processing, as part of a suite of waste management services for South Australian customers
  • Seven Hills Transfer Station (Sydney) The Seven Hills Resource Recovery Centre will soon be known as the REMONDIS Seven Hills Resource Recovery Facility. Public access to drop off general waste, green waste and recyclables will continue. Acquiring a strategically located transfer station in urban Sydney is a critical step in REMONDIS’ plans for growth and development of recycling and circular economy solutions in NSW
  • Selected national Commercial & Industrial customer contracts The servicing of many new national commercial and industrial waste customers will see REMONDIS further expand its national reach across all segments

Bound by strict ACCC conditions, the acquisitions were overseen by an independent manager and auditor ensuring compliance with Veolia’s ACCC undertaking and smooth ownership transfer.

Eighty former SUEZ and Veolia employees have joined REMONDIS through this acquisition.

  • At Wingfield, REMONDIS has retained former SUEZ Operations Manager Peter Young as State C&I and Recycling Manager, together with a full complement of operational and administrative employees
  • REMONDIS WA General Manager Chris Gusenzow will work with the former Veolia WA team to add Jandakot to REMONDIS’ existing commercial operational footprint at Canning Vale, Osborne Park and Henderson
  • REMONDIS NSW/ACT General Manager Susie McBurney will work with the former SUEZ Seven Hills team to bring the Seven Hills site into the REMONDIS NSW network

“This is a significant milestone in REMONDIS’ 40-year history in Australia,” REMONDIS Australia Chairman Björn Becker said.

“The deal enables us to re-establish a strong presence in South Australia and strengthen our footprint in Western Australia and New South Wales.

“The acquisition in Australia aligns with the REMONDIS Group’s global objectives of increasing investment in the areas of water, recycling and services.

“At every turn we’re deploying international best-practice to lift cost-efficient and environmentally sustainable waste management and recycling services to new levels.”
