REMONDIS has retained the contract to manage the ACT Government’s main disposal sites
The newly consolidated contract will enable cost and operational efficiencies, and includes management of environmental monitoring systems with expanded reporting conditions
REMONDIS will acquire a new compactor, dozer and excavator
MEDIA RELEASE
REMONDIS Australia will continue providing major waste management services in the Australian Capital Territory for at least another five years, having retained the ACT Government contract for landfill operations.
This will see REMONDIS continue delivering general operations and landfill management services at Mugga Lane Resource Management Centre and Mugga Lane Quarry at Symonston, the ACT’s main disposal sites.
For the first time, the management of both sites has been streamlined under one contract, enabling better cost and operational efficiencies.
Ongoing obligations include running the sites in line with world’s best practice, ensuring that safety, efficiency and environmental responsibility are priorities. This principle is aligned with REMONDIS’s global focus on maximising diversion from landfill, re-use, recycling and resource recovery.
The Mugga Lane site receives materials permitted through ACT Environmental Authorisation rules, including putrescible and hazardous waste. Mugga Lane Quarry receives VENM (Virgin Excavated Natural Material), ACM (Asbestos Containing Material) and BRU (Beneficial Re-use Material).
As part of the contract REMONDIS has committed to investing in a new compactor, dozer, excavator and many other pieces of new equipment.
REMONDIS is also tasked with operating and maintaining multiple Territory-owned waste management assets including an environmental data collection and management system, a truck wheel-wash system and a leachate pumping station.
Expanded reporting conditions will take compliance to a new level.
“REMONDIS enjoys a successful working relationship with the ACT Government and the extension of this contract is testimony to our expertise and local committment,” Susie McBurney, REMONDIS Australia’s Executive General Manager – Operations, said.
“We will continue drawing on our extensive global knowledge to ensure the best possible outcomes at these ACT sites.”
REMONDIS has operated both sites since acquiring Thiess in 2012 and has options to extend operations at each site for separate one year terms beyond the contract expiry in 2028.
The tender opened in December 2022 and closed in February this year.
