NAIDOC Week 2023 theme ‘For Our Elders’ inspired this artwork

We recently invited local Indigenous artist Acacia Collard to our Western Australian offices to guide our team, including colleagues and friends from Gnalla Enviro, to co-create a remarkable artwork.
The artwork tells the story of the theme of NAIDOC Week 2023 which is ‘For Our Elders’. Elders hold a very important place in Indigenous communities; they are the keepers of knowledge and the leaders of our families, as Acacia explained.
“In the centre of the artwork is a big yarning circle surrounded by our elders – female elders with their yandi dish and digging stick, and male elders with their spear and kylie. On the left and right side are a series of smaller circles which represent families and communities”, explained Acacia, adding that the team saw this as the communities that REMONDIS are connected to.
Former Gnalla Enviro Aboriginal Development Manager Michelle Laylan, who has fostered REMONDIS’s engagement with Indigenous communities and workers, was on hand while our local crew took time out to learn, listen, and allow their creativity to shine.
Even though the participants were initially apprehensive, the final outcome shows what can be achieved when you start with open hearts, a blank canvas – and a skilled guide.
“It was great to see everyone adding their own little part to the piece and to see their amazement at the end”, said Michelle.
The artwork is now on display at REMONDIS Jandakot.
