ANNOUNCEMENT

REMONDIS Australia, the Australian arm of privately owned global waste management leader REMONDIS Group, has released its third sustainability report documenting the local operation’s environmental, social and governance achievements and targets.

In 2021 REMONDIS Australia aligned its sustainability strategy to the United Nation’s Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), using the SDG framework combined with local materiality assessments to focus its ambitions.

Demonstrating transparency around the company’s sustainability approach, this Sustainability Report 2023 focuses on performance and outcomes against targets and objectives set for the 2023 calendar year.

REMONDIS Australia achieve the majority of targets it set for itself for 2023. Highlights of the company’s 2023 environment, sustainability and governance performance include:

  • Increasing the quantity of plastic, metal, paper and cardboard diverted from landfill by 14.92% (compared to 2022)
  • 2023 total recyclables diverted included 2,025 tonnes of plastic, 7,736 tonnes of steel, 101,647 tonnes of cardboard and paper and 5,903 tonnes of paint
  • Commenced operations of a hydrogen-powered heavy waste collection vehicle in NSW, and undertook trials of electric heavy vehicle in ACT Read on
  • Adding 776 kW of solar PC capacity across a further 6 branches, as part of a National Solar Initiative Read on
  • Deployed new systems for safety and compliance, including Chain of Responsibility training and Contractor Management software
  • Improved safety metrics, reducing LTISR and HPIFR
  • Completed gender pay gap analysis, with improvements on 2022
  • Commenced collaboration with Indigenous-owned Gnalla Enviro, and began planning for an Indigenous Engagement Plan
  • Social employment partnership with Good Sammy Enterprises Read on

REMONDIS Australia’s sustainability practice is overseen by Executive General Manager Technical Conor Flynn, with Environment and Sustainability Manager Guy Raithby-Veall and his team.

In introducing this year’s report, CEO Björn Becker remarked on the shifts in reporting requirements – both locally and in Europe – which will change the way the company reports in future, and noted the work already well underway in 2023 to ensure local operations are prepared for mandatory climate-related financial disclosures and European CSRD reporting standards.

“These efforts underscore our dedication to responsible environmental stewardship and position us to lead in sustainable resource management. As always, our focus is firmly on the future,” said Mr Becker.
