Vale Kevin Davies

14 January 2025

IN MEMORIUM

Today we’re reflecting on the passing of Kevin Davies, REMONDIS Cairns Manager and Mareeba Shire Councillor, and greatly valued friend and colleague.

Kevin passed away on 14 January after a short battle with cancer, aged 56. He is survived by wife Pauline and sons Liam and Bradley.

Alex Hatherly (REMONDIS Australia COO) and Ishrar Ali (GM Queensland), joined many hundreds of mourners at Kevin’s funeral, held on Friday 24 January. The funeral concluded with a police-escorted drive through the streets of Mareeba and a ‘guard of honour’ with funeral attendees lining both sides of the road. It was an event appropriate to the enormous scale and reach of Kevin’s impact on the local community, marking a life rich in service, community and friendship.

Kevin worked for REMONDIS for thirteen years as manager for the Cairns region, with responsibility for Springmount Waste Management Facility, Woree Transfer Station and Douglas Shire’s Killaloe Transfer Station along with supporting the region with bulk transport solutions. In addition, he represented the community as Counsellor for Mareeba Shire Council since 2016, including as Deputy Mayor from 2020-2024. And furthermore, Kevin was an energetic and generous volunteer, heavily involved in the Rotary Club, the RSL Club, the local football team, the local Anglican Church and as Chair of the Great Wheelbarrow Race committee.

The local newspaper, The Express, reported Kevin’s passing as “Mareeba loses true community champion”, writing “while Cr Davies’ life was tragically cut short, his never-wavering passion and commitment to the Mareeba Shire will never be forgotten.”

Mareeba Mayor Angela Topping paid tribute to Kevin, saying “Cr Davies was a dear friend to many, and his loss is going to be felt far and wide in our community. He had a great sense of humour and treated everyone with kindness”.

Mareeba Rotary President Charlie Martens said Kevin “would always approach work as not a chore because he was helping someone or doing something that would make life better – so, to him, life was fun, doing things were fun and making things better was fun.”

The Local Authority Waste Management Action Committee (LAWMAC) said “Kevin’s contributions to LAWMAC over many years have been invaluable, and his passing leaves a significant void. A respected recipient of the Rossko Award in 2019, Kevin’s commitment to innovation and collaboration set him apart as a true leader in the field. His enthusiasm for sharing knowledge and showcasing innovation often defied the typical commercial mould, embodying the spirit of partnership that LAWMAC fosters.

"Uniquely, Kevin served LAWMAC in dual capacities, representing both the industry and local government as a Mareeba Shire Councillor since 2016. His ability to balance these roles seamlessly was a testament to his passion for waste management, local government, and his unwavering professionalism. Kevin’s legacy of collaboration, innovation, and dedication will not be forgotten. He will be deeply missed by his colleagues, friends, and the entire LAWMAC community.”

Kevin’s friends and colleagues at REMONDIS and FGF (our joint venture partner in Springmount Waste Management Facility) will remember his calm professionalism when managing the day-to-day operations, frequent challenges, and complex, large-scale infrastructure projects which defined his career. He will be sorely missed.

At Kevin’s funeral, in lieu of flowers, attendees were encouraged to consider a donation to the FNQ Hospital Foundation.
