REMONDIS makes first commercial waste delivery to Australia’s first waste-to-energy plant

REMONDIS has signed a Waste Supply Agreement with the facility, diverting this material from disposal at landfill

MILESTONE

On 18 July, REMONDIS Australia was delighted to deliver the very first load of commercial general waste to Acciona’s brand new Kwinana Energy Recovery facility in Western Australia.

It’s the first front-lift load received by the first waste-to-energy (WTE) facility of this kind in Australia – and that’s a major milestone for waste management in this country.

Our WA team, led by GM Chris Gusenzow, was on hand to celebrate the commissioning of the new facility.

REMONDIS Australia has signed a Waste Supply Agreement with the facility, committing to supply the plant with non-recyclable general commercial waste which would otherwise be disposed to landfill. City of Kwinana, Rivers Regional Council, Town of East Fremantle and Resource Recovery Group are among those making similar supply agreements.

Once operational, Kwinana Energy Recovery will divert up to 460,000 tonnes of waste per annum from landfill and deliver 38 megawatts of renewable baseload power to the Western Power grid.

The case for energy recovery

In WA, REMONDIS processes in excess of 85,000 tpa (120,000t including liquids) of recoverable waste (such as cardboard and plastics) through our local recycling facilities.

As a part of our waste recovery focus and to better manage waste that is not recovered for recycling or reuse, we are excited to be sending commercial and industrial waste to Australia’s first operational waste-to-energy (WTE) plant.

The benefits of energy recovery facilities such as this one include:

  • Burning waste and recovering steam, which then powers electric generators producing electricity, reduces our reliance on fossil fuel driven electricity generation
  • The opportunity to recover valuable resources, such as metals and aggregate, post-incineration. All metals are recovered and sent for recycling and aggregate is recovered and used in the construction industry
  • Traditional landfills are finite spaces, and as our population grows, so does our waste. By diverting waste to WtE plants, we free up valuable landfill space
  • Mitigating greenhouse gases by diverting waste from methane-producing landfills. Landfills emit methane, a potent greenhouse gas. Methane is about 25 times more potent as a greenhouse gas than carbon dioxide over a 100-year period
  • Recovering energy from waste contributes to a circular economy in which resources are reused and waste is minimised.

For REMONDIS, diverting our commercial non-recyclable general waste from landfill to Kwinana for energy production is the obvious choice for sustainable waste management and environmental stewardship.
