When we refer to green waste or garden organics, we mean grass clippings, leaves, food scraps or organic material including bones, shells, leaves or grass without any packaging, plastic, or harsh chemicals (such as strong pesticides).
In households this type of waste is often referred to as green waste pr ‘garden organics’ and placed into the green garden bin. In businesses, green waste recycling services are most common in agriculture or landscaping businesses, schools, councils and aged care facilities.
Garden organics recycling services vary across states and territories, so it’s important to check the materials acceptable to your provider. For example, in some municipalities, food organics (or FOGO) are placed in green waste bins. Here’s a guide to what to place in conventional garden organics bins:

After the garden organics are collected, we transport the material to a specialised Organics Resource Recovery Facility (ORRF).
The green waste is then shredded and any contaminants are removed. It’s then mixed into piles using a blend of food and garden waste to achieve optimal moisture levels.
At REMONDIS’ state-of-the-art ORRFs these piles are loaded into purpose-built tunnels to reduce odour and maintain optimal composting conditions. In as little as two weeks, these piles will break down into nutrient-rich material, which is then shredded again and sorted into compost (smaller particles) or mulch (larger particles) for use on parks, gardens, agriculture and sporting grounds.
